Notre Dame High School are proud to be part of the Apprenticeships Norfolk Network, supported by Norfolk County Council.

The Apprenticeships Norfolk Network has been set up to make it easier for employers and young people to find out more about Apprenticeships.

Network members include training providers, schools, employers and other organisations that all work in partnership to make sure they provide excellent help and support to everyone looking to become or recruit an apprentice.

What are Apprenticeships?

Apprentices are employees, they earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills and accredited qualifications.

Incorporated with the practical training, they complete a day-release College course, or are visited at work by a designated Vocational Assessor, from a College or Training Provider, to work towards nationally recognised vocational qualifications.

Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of apprenticeship, the apprentice’s ability and the industry sector.

Structure

Apprenticeships are designed with the help of the employers in the industry. They offer a structured programme that teaches the apprentice the skills needed to be competent in the role.

There are targets and checks to make sure that the employer is supporting the apprentice to make the required progress to pass the qualification and succeed in a future career.

Every apprentice will have an Apprenticeship Agreement. An Apprenticeship Agreement is an agreement between the apprentice and the employer.

The purpose of the Apprenticeship Agreement is to:

  • Identify the skill, trade or occupation for which you are being trained
  • Ensure the qualifying apprenticeship framework that you are following is fit for purpose.
  • Ensure the correct training is supplied to achieve competency in the skill, trade or occupation.
  • Ensure the apprentice will be safe and treated according to employment law during their training.
  • So the apprentice agrees to be ready to learn and work, within the law, as required by the employer.

An Apprenticeship Agreement reflects the fact that an Apprenticeship is primarily a job, rather than a training course and has to abide by employment law.
