Non-Examination Assessment
What is NEA?
NEA – Non-Examination Assessment is any part of a qualification that is marked and moderated in school, rather than being assessed by a written exam. It includes coursework, practical work and controlled assessments.
What are provisional marks?
These are the marks for your NEA that the school has awarded. Your teacher is required to tell you them before they are sent to the exam board. They are provisional because the exam boards also moderate each school’s marking to ensure that it is consistent with national standards. This means that your marks could be changed before final grades are awarded.
What do I do if I don’t think my work has been marked correctly?
You can request a review of marking
Being unhappy with your mark is not sufficient grounds for requesting a review. You must show clear evidence of where the NEA was marked incorrectly.
Do this as follows:
- Request the marked work (copies of or reviewed under supervision depending on what it is) and the mark scheme or assessment criteria. You must make this request within 2 school days of receipt of your marks
- If you have concerns, submit a formal request for a review by completing the IA1 form. You must clearly state the reasons for the review. This must be done within 5 days of receipt of your marked work and assessment criteria.
What happens next?
The marking will be reviewed by a subject specialist who was not involved in the original marking or moderation. You will be informed of the result within 3 days. If there is still disagreement, the matter will be considered by the Head of Centre whose decision is final.
Remember!
You must adhere to the above deadlines. Late applications cannot be considered due to exam boards’ submission deadlines.
Only students can request marking reviews, parents cannot make them on a student’s behalf.
