Why study this subject?

Philosophy and Ethics is an ancient subject that looks at some of the fundamental questions about life. Philosophy of religion starts with a study of the Ancient Greek thinking about the nature of existence, journey’s through the middle ages to modern arguments for and against the existence of God. Ethics (Moral Philosophy) considers a range of approaches to ethical reasoning and applies these theories to a range of practical situations. Always relevant, the subject develops reasoning skills and will support and enhance evaluative writing.

This subject is very well thought of by universities and is a popular subject at Notre Dame. Students study this subject alongside subjects like History, Politics, Sociology and English.  For those studying mainly Science it is a good arts subject to support their written and verbal communication and develop their breadth of study.  Students can go on to study Philosophy or Theology at university or take the course to compliment their other studies.  An understanding of this subject will be beneficial for medicine, law, education or politics.

Year 12 are offered the chance to attend a Philosophy Conference where high quality speakers present their ideas.

The subject is assessed by examination only requiring structured essays.
