All students follow the national strategy for Mathematics in years 7 to 9.

Mathematics is taught in ability sets with regular termly analysis or progress and movement between sets. image of symmetry

The four areas of study are Number, Algebra, Shape & Space and Data Handling. A variety of mathematical techniques are taught to enable students to develop their own strategies in Numeracy. A strong emphasis on functional skills and application of mathematics to problem solving runs through all areas of the course. The use of a scientific calculator is a vital part of the skill set that each student needs to develop. All students are expected to bring their own calculator to every lesson.

The course is broken down into half termly modules that cover a range of topics; these are detailed in the student booklets . Half term tests are graded using levels with targets set for students to act upon as part of the test review cycle.  The student booklet is used to help students assess their own progress and as an aid to revision. The school subscribes to MyMaths, www.mymaths.co.uk this is a virtual learning environment that students can use for self-study, revision and homework.

We consider the six skills vital components in developing mathematical understanding, pupils are guided as to which skills they need to further develop in order to reach their potential.
