    Norwich Model Arctic Council

In February we were privileged to  attended the third Norwich Model Arctic Council (NORMAC) at Norwich School - the only event of its kind in the world.

Notre Dame students represented two separate delegations at the event - The Inuit Circumpolar Council and Iceland -  where students from across Europe convened at the Model Arctic Council to debate issues such as methane hydrates, broadband connectivity and the possibility of admitting the European Union as an observer organisation.

Negotiations were fruitful and often heated, but delegations were able to reach the consensus to secure unanimous support for targets on broadband connectivity. Despite eleventh-hour attempts, agreement on admitting the EU failed to secure support of all Arctic States.

Notre Dame students Abigail Foster, Cece Turner, Isobel Keane, Lily Ewin, Moira Maguire and Ned Mead were excellent delegates and perfectly captured the spirit of collegiality over the weekend, and our ICC delegation were delighted to have been jointly awarded 'delegation of the conference'.

Many thanks to all staff and students at Norwich School for hosting an outstanding event, with special mention to Dr Anthony Speca, Tom White and all of the secretariat.
